The Worcester High School Connection

Worcester High School stands as a beacon of pride for SL-WHP members because the great Worcester High (WHS) served as a cornerstone of our educational journey. Under the visionary leadership of Principal John McDowell, WHS exemplified excellence in education for Black students in Worcester County and beyond. McDowell’s unwavering commitment to academic rigor shaped our experience, setting a standard unmatched by other high schools.

Transitioning to Pocomoke High, many of us found the academic environment there less demanding, a testament to the exceptional standards McDowell set at Worcester. McDowell’s no-nonsense approach to education fostered a culture where both students and educators embraced intellectual growth and scholarship. Hand-selecting faculty from esteemed institutions such as Bowie State, Hampton Institute, Morgan State, and Maryland State (now the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore), McDowell ensured that Worcester High attracted top-tier talent dedicated to our success. The legacy of McDowell and the enduring spirit of Worcester High are encapsulated in the Stephen Long-Worcester High Pioneers organization.

Please know that SL-WHP extends an open invitation to all Worcester High graduates and asks that you unite with us in our mission to advance educational opportunities for all residents of Worcester County. We want you to be part of this organization. Together, we can be a united family committed to shaping a brighter future for generations to come.
