Honoring Legacy: The Stephen Long-Worcester High Pioneers Scholarship

In the annals of educational history, there are figures whose contributions transcend mere instruction, leaving an indelible mark on generations to come. Professor Stephen Handy Long, the first Supervisor of Colored Schools in Worcester County, Maryland, was one such luminary. His tragic demise in 1921, at the hands of a white farmer, shook the community to its core, but his memory lives on through the Stephen Long-Worcester High Pioneers Scholarship (SL-WHP).

Established by several graduates of the all-Black elementary school named in honor of Professor Long in 1937, the SL-WHP scholarship is a testament to Long’s exceptional leadership in engineering exceptional educational experiences for Black students within Worcester County schools during the first two decades of the 20th century. These founding members also sought to pay homage to the outstanding educational experience they received at Stephen Long Elementary School, a beloved institution  that no longer exists.

The inaugural recipient of the SL-WHP scholarship is Mr. Amir Harmon, a graduate of Snow Hill High School. Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science at Morgan State University, Mr. Harmon embodies the values espoused by Professor Long. Mr. Harmon’s dedication to academic excellence and community service is setting a shining example for future generations.

Amir was honored at a special ceremony held in Salisbury, Maryland, on December 29, 2023. During the event, SL-WHP officers presented Mr. Harmon a $1,000 check to support his educational journey at Morgan State University. This gesture not only recognized Mr. Harmon’s achievements but also reaffirmed the scholarship’s commitment to fostering academic success among deserving students.

The scholarship committee, in its mission to uphold Professor Long’s legacy, began the selection process in early spring of 2023. Seeking applicants from Worcester County schools, they prioritized individuals demonstrating outstanding character and a dedication to community service, traits emblematic of Professor Long’s values. The outreach efforts included appearances at Pocomoke High School and other venues within Worcester County.

As SL-WHP prepares for its second round of scholarships, the committee invites eligible students to apply. Starting on April 18, 2024, applications will be available upon request at slwhp556@gmail.com. Prospective applicants must ensure that completed applications are postmarked no later than Monday, July 1, 2024, and mailed to the address specified in application packet.

The Stephen Long-Worcester High Pioneers Scholarship stands as a beacon of hope and opportunity, honoring the legacy of Professor Stephen Handy Long while empowering future leaders to reach greater heights.
